Notre-Dame Cathedral Highly Recommended Highly Recommended Highly Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
It was the master Jean d'Orbais who was commissioned, in 1211, to build this cathedral, and was instructed to make it look like those that were currently being built elsewhere (In Paris, Soissons and Chartres). The interior is dated 1285. On the outside of the cathedral there are 2 300 statues and the façade is one of France's most beautiful, especially at the end of the afternoon when the sun caresses the stone. The three doorways corresponding to the three naves are surmounted by a gable which is used to support the sculptures. The variety of poses of the sculptures are representative of Champagnoise sculpture. You have a beautiful view across the chevet and the sheer volume of the cathedral from the cours Anatole-France. The interior is striking because of its unity, its sobriety and its remarkable size. The nave is very narrow for its length. The back of the façade is cut with little niches accommodating statues. This work by Gaucher de Reims is unique in Gothic history. The stained glass windows which survive the First World War are absolutely beautiful (in the apse and the beautiful rose window on the façade) ; the master glass workers of the Simon factory worked for generations on the restoration of these windows, Brigitte Simon Marcq made a series of abstract windows to the right of the baptismal fonts and it was the Simon workshops that did the stained glass windows by Chagall in the apsidal chapel.
