From St-Maurice-sur-Moselle, the D 465 leads to the Ballon d'Alsace. The road up to the Col du Ballon commands some fine views of the Moselle Valley before heading into a superb forest of pines and larches. The top of the pass affords a wonderful panorama of the peak and, further to the right, of the northern Jura and the Trouée de Belfort, studded with small lakes. Further on, the road continues up to the Ballon d'Alsace, from where you can enjoy a view that extends northwards as far as Donon, over the Alsace plain and the Black Forest to the east, and to Mont Blanc in the south. The road down to Lac d'Alfed is equally beautiful and offers a chance to admire the Grand Ballon, the highest peak of the Vosges (1 424m), the Doller Valley, the Jura and the Alps.
