Massif du Donon Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Lying between St-Dié-des-Vosges and Saverne, this massif (alt. 1 009m) constitutes the southern end of the sandstone section of the Vosges mountains. Whichever side you approach from, you will recognise the form of this two-tier summit that marks the border between Alsace and Lorraine. Thickly covered with silver fir and spruce trees, Mt Donon is also the source of several streams. It used to be considered a sacred mountain, as is in evidence at its summit, where there remain traces of religious ceremonies which go back to Celtic and Gallo-Roman times.
