Sélestat
: Michelin's recommendations
This is the town where the Christmas tree was invented. Given the ubiquitous nature of this festive symbol, such a distinction ought to have granted the town universal renown. But this is not the only claim to fame of this Alsace town. It is the birthplace of the Lutheran pastor Martin Bucer (1491-1551) and during the Renaissance was a great humanist centre. It has preserved many traces of this glorious era in its architecture... plus a fabulous library.
