The historic district of Strasbourg nestles on the island formed by two arms of the River Ill. The Maison Kammerzell (1589), a masterpiece of wood carving to the left of Notre-Dame, makes a good starting point to explore the cathedral and its superb spire, stained-glass windows, pulpit, tapestries and organ. Stroll through the streets of Petite France and admire the medieval houses. Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes is, however, more representative of the Renaissance style. Above all, don't miss the superb view which unfolds from the Vauban dam.
