Vieil-Armand
: Michelin's recommendations
The name of Vieil-Armand was given by French soldiers in the First World War to the Hartmannswillerkopf, a small peak at the foot of the Vosges mountains near the Alsace plain. An excellent strategic position, Vieil-Armand was one of the bloodiest battlefields on the Front. In 1915 alone, the summit changed hands four times. Thousands of Germans and French gave their lives for Vieil-Armand. By the time this horrific chapter ended, between 30 000 and 60 000 soldiers had died here.
