Route des Crêtes
Route des Crêtes
: Michelin's recommendations
The 80km-long route des Crêtes links the Col du Bonhomme and Thann and offers countless superb viewpoints. The Col du Bonhomme (949m) is a strategic point between Alsace and Lorraine. The Col de la Schlucht at 1 135m has a small ski resort. Nearby are the botanical gardens of Haut-Chitelet, whose rockeries boast 2 700 species of plants from the main mountain ranges of the world. In the Vologne Valley, you can see Lake Longemer and Lake Retournemer. Don't miss Hohneck, one of the most famous and highest summits (1 362m) of the Vosges. Before the First World War, it marked the border between France and Germany. From this vantage point an exceptional panorama unfolds, encompassing the Vosges, the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and, in fine weather, even the Alps. The Grand Ballon is the highest point of the Vosges (1 424m) and offers splendid views. Nearby are the ruins of Freundstein Castle and Vieil-Armand, site of fierce fighting during the Great War. The delightful town of Thann, famous for its Rangen wine and Gothic church, is a gastronomical and cultural stop-off point.
