Situated on the road linking the Saône and Loire valleys and an important market town since the Middle Ages, Charlieu became a major silk weaving centre in the 19C, with both factories and family workshops. The Musée de la Soierie is dedicated to the silk industry, boasting a fine collection of period fabrics and dresses.
