Pope Clement VI had the current church rebuilt by the Occitan architect Hugues Morel from 1344 to 1352. Hewn in granite, it has an air of grandeur and austerity, offset by the 15C rood screen, the superb 17C organ case, and the splendid chancel surrounded by 144 oak stalls (15C). Stop to admire the remarkable 16C wool, linen and silk Flemish tapestries, and note the famous 26m-long Danse macabre fresco in the chancel’s left aisle.
