Lavaudieu
: Michelin's recommendations
St Robert, the first abbot of La Chaise-Dieu, chose this site on the Sénouire river to found an abbey in the 11C. It is a particularly charming little town, where time seems to stand still, with wooden-balconied houses and the chevet of the church reflecting in the clear water of the small river that has its source on La Chaise-Dieu plateau. The convent buildings feature beautiful Romanesque cloisters and the former farmer/baker’s house is now a museum of folk arts and traditions.

Lavaudieu Abbey cloisters
Musée A.T.P F - 43100 Lavaudieu
All that remains of the old abbey founded in the 11C by St Robert is the fine (restored) cloister, the only one in Auvergne to have escaped destruction. Admire its small columns, either single or twinned, wreathed, cylindrical or polygonal, their cap..
Restaurants Lavaudieu

Court La Vigne
F - 43100 Lavaudieu
Head for the medieval cloister: this charming 15C sheepfold is just a stone's throw away. The bar and its fireplace, the art gallery and the courtyard are all very pleasant features. Local organic wines are served with the unpretentious local cuisine..

Auberge de l'Abbaye
F - 43100 Lavaudieu
This inn, which stands next to the lovely abbey, gives its take - a charming one at that - on rustic style. The owner's regional cooking (using market ingredients) and her husband's service in the restaurant make for a convivial atmosphere.
