Designed by the architect Bernard Zehrhuss, this museum backs into a hill and appears to be partly buried in it. It houses Gallo-Roman collections uncovered at Lugdunum. Urban development, municipal administration, the army, religions, theatre and circus games, domestic life and early Christianity in Gaul are the subjects covered in this museum, which also displays the remarkable Claudian tablet (inscribed with Claudius’ speech in favour of the Gauls) and a bronze-engraved Gaulish calendar.
