Museum of old St Etienne : Michelin's recommendations

There is a map here dating from 1258 which gives the first mention of the name St Etienne. There are plans and engravings illustrating the history of the town. There is also a recreation of the first railway line ever opened in France. This was in May 1827. Wagons loaded with coal were pulled by horses over a distance of 21 km between St Etienne and Andrezieux.
