Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire : Michelin's recommendations

St Maurice enjoys a picturesque setting in the Roanne Gorges of the Loire. Looking over a stretch of river approaching the Villerest dam, the old houses of the market town cling to a spur topped by the ruins of a feudal castle. There is a lovely view over the gorge from the terrace of the keep. Be sure to see the church, which is decorated with 13C Romanesque paintings, and the Manoir de La Mure-Chantois, which you enter through a door decorated with sculptures depicting Adam and Eve. Note the stair tower (16C) with its finely sculpted pediment.
