Musée de Saint-Romain-en-Gal : Michelin's recommendations
The museum is located on the site of St-Romain-en-Gal on the banks of the Rhône. It stands on pillars above the Lion's House. The building is made of glass and steel and was designed by Philippe Chaix and Jean-Paul Morel. It has two sections, connected by a footbridge, and covers an area of 12 000sq.m. One part houses the museum open to the public and the other the mosaic restoration workshop. The establishment traces the daily life of this Gallo-Roman town where baths, storage warehouses and craftsmen's houses used to stand side-by-side with magnificently decorated private residences. The mosaic of the House of the Ocean Gods (180AD) has become the museum's mascot and alone covers an area of 130sq.m. The collections also include other mosaics and rich mural ornamentation. The tour also fully illustrates the arrangement of these vast residences, in an endeavour to determine a characteristic layout. Finally, the museum has exhibits on arts and crafts which were a predominant feature of St-Romain-en-Gal.
