Saint-Romain-en-Gal Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
The 3ha-site contains Roman vestiges in five, irregularly-shaped areas. Rue du Portique, Rue des Thermes and Rue du Commerce are the main thoroughfares of the town. The entrance is dominated by the House of the Ocean Gods dating from 180AD. This house, with a famous mosaic to be found in the museum, is embellished by two gardens. The Wrestlers' Baths are a remarkable sign of Roman influence. The Caldarium, tepidarium and frigidarium are the principal rooms of this residential building. Its painted murals are kept in the museum: naked athletes are depicted in scenes of hand-to-hand wrestling, boxing, all-in wrestling and throwing the discus. Trading activities, located in several areas of the site, were considerable. The horrea in the northwest of the town were vast storage places or attics. A multitude of vestiges of the craftsmen's quarter located at the crossroads of Rue du Commerce and Rue des Thermes can still be seen: pottery, plumbing and dyeing. Weaving, leatherwork and basketmaking were popular crafts.
