It is estimated that the population of this town was 30 000 in the 2C AD, at a time of maximum Roman expansion – five times that of the Middle Ages. The many Roman vestiges across the site, which extends for more than 3ha, bear witness to a period of occupation from the end of the 1C BC to the 3C AD. The layout of the town does not correspond to the traditional grid system normally adopted by the Romans. The two-storey House of the Ocean Gods is the largest and most beautiful on the site.
