Salles became a village dedicated to religion with the installation of a priory. Founded in the 10C by Cluny monks, it was occupied by a chapter of Benedictine nuns in the 14C who, in the 18C became canoness-countesses.

Place du Chapitre

This picturesque square, shaded by lime trees, is where the canonesses had their comfortable houses. Note the church chevet and Romanesque bell-tower with a pyramid-shaped roof, typical of 12C Beaujolais churches.

The entrance to this small, rural church is through a pretty Romanesque doorway. The prior's pulpit dating from the 16C and the 18C stalls are particularly noteworthy.

Chapter House

This 15C chapter house has an elegant ceiling with vaults descending onto a central pillar. The keystones are decorated with the symbols of the four evangelists. Various souvenirs and objets d'art are exhibited here.
