Built in 1170 for the Counts of Auvergne, this feudal castle was for centuries a royal possession (several French queens stayed here, including Jeanne, wife of Jean le Bon, Catherine de Medici and Queen Margot). Inside, note the Romanesque round-mantel chimney, as well as the fine old furniture in the cupola-crowned bedroom in the main tower. An impressive hanging garden, said to be from the Crusades, adjoins the building. The rampart walk boasts a fine view over part of the Dore and Dôme mountains, and the Limagne.
