Villerest
: Michelin's recommendations
This medieval market town has preserved several corbelled and wood-framed houses as well as the ruins of its ramparts. The Porte de Bise marks the beginning of any walking tour of the town. During the summer, craftsmen can be seen at work in the old shops. Be sure to visit the Musée de l’Heure et du Feu, which retraces the history of the use of fire in the home, from how it was lit to how it was maintained, and there are all sorts of lighters on show. Another, more eclectic, section of the museum has a lovely display of clocks and watches from the 18C-20C.
