The road linking Bourg-d'Oisan and the Col du Lautaret cuts through the wild gorges of the Infernet to reach the bottom of the former glacial valley of the River Romanche. It runs alongside the impressive Chambon dam and skirts the austere Combe de Malaval, home to two waterfalls, the Cascades de la Pisse and the Saut de la Pucelle. Between the resort of La Grave and the Col du Lauteret, the valley widens, revealing the peaks and glaciers of the Meije. The jagged peaks of the Combeynot massif now appear in the foreground.
