From the orientation map at the east of the courtyard, you will find a superb view over Brest Harbour, from the mouth of the Elorn to the tip of the Portzic and the Menez-Hom. This vast 150km² harbour leads to the ocean via a long bottleneck with steep banks that is well protected. As a result, the harbour was a useful military strategic point, which made the town a valuable target.
