The narrow streets of the Ville Close occupy an irregularly shaped small island, 350m long and 100m wide, linked to the mainland by two small bridges which divide a fortified structure encircled by sturdy ramparts built in the 14C and completed in the 17C. Loopholes provide several views of the city, including the inner harbour with its moored trawlers, and the fish market. The entrance to the walled town is one of the busiest places in Brittany, providing access to a fortified inner courtyard.
