Overlooking the gentle winding Nançon Valley, this old fortified town was the birthplace of the marquis de La Rouërie, a leader of the Chouans revolt against the Republic at the end of the 18C. Below, on a rocky outcrop almost encircled by the river, stands a fine feudal castle. The town’s medieval quarter and gardens lie at its heart, but it does not live in the past. In the 1970s it diversified into glassmaking, electronics and other contemporary industries, yet it remains a major farming hub.
