The first castle dates from the 11C and was rebuilt from the 13 to the 15C. It has the traditional architectural elements of a medieval castle: drawbridge, the central part or châtelet, machicolated towers, keep (St Laurence's tower), a number of other towers (Madeleine and Montafilant towers) and the fortification walls. Note the Romanesque porch with keystones of alternate colours in the courtyard and the fine 16C triptych in the Oratory tower.
