The Nivernais canal stretches out over 180km between Auxerre in the Yonne départment and the village of  Saint-Léger-des-Vignes, near Decize, in the département of Nièvre.

 

The canal was built in the eighteenth century for the transportation of firewood from the Morvan forests to the French capital. With the advent of coal mining and the late 19th century development of railways it then fell into disuse. Now, since the 1970s the promotion of river tourism has brought the canal back to life.

 

These days it attracts a public with an interest in the region's rich heritage who are in search of tranquillity, intimacy and authenticity. Since the 2009 opening of the canal's véloroute (cycle path) the peaceful coexistence of cyclists, boaters and fishermen is working wonderfully. Unexpected encounters abound: you may even meet the traditional lock keepers. Along this canal abandon all notions of time...

 

Of the many canals that run through Burgundy, the Canal du Nivernais is probably the one that has best preserved its former atmosphere. With its sinuous course, its unassuming status and its numerous works of art, its charm has remained intact. The 758 metres long Collancelle Tunnel, nestled in a patch of greenery, or the Sardy ladder with its series of 16 locks are particularly worthy of attention.
