Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey : Michelin's recommendations
The abbey church has a 15C facade and its portal, is of great iconographic interest: the pier shelters God the Father giving a blessing while the side recesses are the refuge of angels vigorously blowing their musical instruments. Inside, the nave floor is covered with tombstones like the one of Jean of Watteville, an adventurous 17C abbot. To the left of the choir (which dates from 13C) there is a magnificent Flemish reredos with shutters (early 16C). In Chalon Chapel, you can admire a stone statue of Saint Paul (which dates back to the 15C). You may access the abbey buildings from the church: the refectory, dormitory, and the canons' apartments will make you relive the daily life at the abbey.
