The old basilica of Cluny, the largest in all Christianity, is proof of the spiritual life of the Middle Ages. The Clunisian order had considerable influence over the religious, intellectual, political and artistic life of the West. It gave French popes to the Church. Raided after the Revolution, this centre of civilisation only kept a few fragments of the basilica, which are still admirable.
