The second largest forest in France stretches over more than 20 000ha to the east of Dole, between the Doubs and the Loue. The seven famous columns, commissioned by the architect Guidon in 1826, stand at each of the main crossroads and are a useful landmark to avoid getting lost. Don't miss the village of La Vieille-Loye with its Baraques du 14, formerly inhabited by woodcutters and now listed, the Joseph Martin Pottery Museum in Étrepigney, and the enchanting Grottes d'Osselle in Courtefontaine, caves in the cliffs overlooking the Doubs.
