Montbéliard once belonged to the Princes of Wurtemberg and only became part of the Republic of France in 1793, hence its unique atmosphere and appearance. Montbéliard was at the forefront of Renaissance architecture as a result of the work of the visionary town planner, Heinrich Schickhardt. With its medieval streets, its castle perched on a 300m-high rocky spur and its Protestant church, Montbéliard has a number of surprises in store for visitors.
