Not far from the Loire, Paray-le-Monial is a town of the arts, famous for its basilica, a fine example of Cluny architecture. It is a popular place of pilgrimage. In 1673, the nun Marguerite-Marie Alacoque is said to have seen Jesus Christ for the first time and the experience was repeated on several occasions until 1690. Marguerite-Marie was made a saint in 1920.
