Pontarlier : Michelin's recommendations
Situated near the Swiss border, at the foot of the Jura mountains, Pontarlier prospered as a result of absinthe, which inspired a number of poets and writers in the 19C and led many of them to their death. Absinthe was banned in 1915, resulting in a setback for the people of Pontarlier. As a result, its distilleries were converted into factories for making aniseed-flavoured drinks. Nowadays, Pontarlier is a popular base for hikers in summer and skiers in winter.
