Château de St-Fargeau
Château de St-Fargeau
: Michelin's recommendations
Built in several stages since Renaissance times, the current castle stands on the site of a fortress erected by a relative of Hugues Capet around 980. Six towers flank the building, the largest of which was built by Jacques Coeur, treasurer to King Charles VII (1403-61). Antoine de Chabannes, former companion of Joan of Arc, carried out many improvements, including the present pentagonal shape. It was Mademoiselle de Montpensier, in exile in St-Fargeau, who, around 1665, called in the king's architect, Louis Le Vau, to renovate the buildings and design the wing which bears her name. In 1681, Mademoiselle de Montpensier made a gift of St-Fargeau to the Duc de Lauzun, a disgraced courtier whom she later secretly married. In 1715, the property was bought by Le Peletier des Forts. His great-grandson, Louis-Michel Le Peletier de St-Fargeau, elected deputy to the National Convention in 1792, voted for the death of Louis XVI. He was assassinated on the eve of the king's execution by a bodyguard and was considered by the revolutionaries as the first martyr of their cause. He is buried in the chapel. Today a show recounts the history of the château and the Puisaye region. The entrance rotunda, portrait gallery, 17C guardroom and the "martyr's" family apartments (billiard room, reception room and dining room with furniture and period decorative elements) are open to the public. A tour of the attics allows visitors to admire the enormous roof area and the handsome timberwork, some of which is four centuries old.

Pros
les tours surmontées d'un lanternon font tout le charme de cette demeure, qui, bien que située en ville, possède à l'arrière un immense parc traversé par une pièce d'eau
