The Archdiocese of Sens has seen the former greatness of the city. From Roman times it was the capital of the Grande Senonie, made up of Chartres, Auxerre, Meaux, Paris, Orléans eandTroyes. This trusteeship was perpetuated in the Archdiocese and it is therefore not surprising that it was here that the first great Gothic cathedral was built. But then little Paris became bigger; the diocese lost Meaux, Chartres and Orléans and Sens became just a pleasant small town grouped around its cathedral.
