The Ballon de Servance, located a few miles west of the Ballon d'Alsace, is 1 216m high. The River Ognon has its turbulent beginnings here. The easiest way to differentiate between the two Ballons is by looking at the peaks: a Virgin Mary stands atop the Ballon d'Alsace, while the Ballon de Servance is crowned by a military fort. There are magnificent panoramic views from the summit: the Vallée de l'Ognon, the Esmoulières Plateau and the Langres Plateau to the west; to the northwest, the Monts Faucilles; to the northeast, the Vosges Mountains; to the east the Ballon d'Alsace; and to the south, the foothills of the Vosges.
