Fontenay Abbey
Fontenay Abbey
: Michelin's recommendations
A fine example of an autarkic Cistercian monastery, the well-restored abbey in its green isolated valley was consecrated in 1147 by Pope Eugene III in the presence of St Bernard, founder of the Order. The land, called Fontanetum, as it “floats on fountains” (like many abbey sites) was given by his relative, Raynard de Montbard. The abbey church, one of France’s oldest Cistercian foundations, is open. To its south, the robust, elegant cloister is a masterpiece. Note also the dormitory, chapter house, scriptorium and forge.
