Guédelon Medieval Building Site Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

In 1998 this former quarry in the middle of the forest became the setting for a unique project to build a castle using 13C methods. No bulldozers or lorries are used: instead, horses and oxen pull carts laden with stone, wood and sand. There are no cranes, instead the ingenious lifting systems available to the medieval builder are in evidence. Stonemasons, blacksmiths and carpenters all work according to traditional methods. Locally produced pottery and regional specialities are on sale in the Cistercian barn at the site entrance.
