Le Niolo
Le Niolo
: Michelin's recommendations
The Niolo is the glacial basin formed by the upper reaches of the Golo, the longest river on the island. Its wild terrain was an enclave for a long time, giving this region a real sense of independence from the rest of inland Corsica. The region is overlooked by Monte Cinto (2 706m), the highest point on the island, from whose peak you can see the whole of Corsica. The area is conducive to walking, with the Lac de Nino, which is carpeted with tender green grass (due to the pozzines: little peaty waterholes), the Valdu-Niellu Forest and its superb European Black Pines, as well as dry-stone sheepfolds.
