The capital of the “granary of France” as the Beauce region is known, Chartres has a spectacular cathedral, and is famed as a pilgrim destination and for its stained-glass windows of indescribable blue hues. Chartres is also rich in medieval houses, fine churches, narrow streets and stairways leading down to the banks of the River Eure.
