The town was devastated during the Vendée Wars so badly that very little remains of buildings built before the Revolution. Nevertheless, at the heart of the city the place Rouge, the rue du Devau and the rue du Commerce (pedestrianised) have preserved some houses with attractive, wrought-iron balconies from the 18C.
