Chambord’s original medieval layout, a central keep, four towers and perimeter wall was an impressive structure, later embellished in the style of a Tuscan villa with a cross-plan hall and a double helix staircase by Leonardo da Vinci. The Renaissance architecture has no defensive features; this is purely a royal pleasure palace, its imposing façades with sculpture and broad bays of entirely Italian inspiration. Two wings were added to the keep; one houses the royal apartments, the other the chapel.
