Laid out over four terraces, Villandry’s gardens are the epitome of Renaissance architectural convention. On the upper level the garden of the sun is a former meadow surronded by lime trees and dominates the whole ensemble. The water garden is the next level down with its mirror-like pool again surrounded by lime trees. Below is an ornamental garden and at the bottom a Renaissance kitchen garden, the least restored section of the ensemble. Between here and the church is a herb garden.
