Surveyed by the Eagle's Nest of its Citadel, Corte has its shale buildings topped with red roofs massing together on a proud rounded hillock that stands in the heart of a mountain chain. Founded by an adventurer working for the King of Aragon Vincentello d'Istria, Corte was the capital during the short-lived period of Corsican independence (1755-1769) under Pascal Paoli. Then it became a university city... for four years only, recovering this role in 1981!
