Church of St-Pierre of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne : Michelin's recommendations
Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne became a pilgrimage centre due to its church, St-Pierre, which was built over a period of two centuries. It is a perfect symbol of architectural influences from the Limousin region and from the Southwest of France. The beauty of this building lies mainly in its southern portal (dating back to the 12C). It constitutes one of the first masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture. In this disturbing composition, representing the prelude of Judgement Day, Christ seems to detach himself from the scene in a triumphant attitude. The church's chevet, of harmonious and decorative architectural value, allows you to catch a glimpse of the remains of the cloister. Inside the building, nothing upsets the peacefulness which can be found inside. In the left transept, Inside the church, a treasury contains a 12C statue of the Virgin sitting down, it is made of wood and its silver plating bestows it with unequalled beauty.
