Beynac-and Cazenac Castle Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
This castle which belonged to Richard the Lion Hear and then to Simon of Montfort in 1214, achieved its final form with Lord of Beynac who was in charge of its reconstruction. Its dominating position, which reaches its highest point at 150 m above the Dordogne Valley, makes it possible to watch the surroundings and to envisage a defence in a short period of time. The massive architectural ensemble, which can be admired today, is made up of a double wall, a donjon, a stately country house (formerly the castle's chapel). its construction lasted from the 13C to the 17C. Inside, the castle still shows the splendour of different periods, such as the oratory's Gothic frescos and the great 17C staircase with a straight banister which provides access to the wall walk. From here, you can admire a magnificent view across the Dordogne Valley and the castles of Castelnaud and Fayrac.
