Brantôme abbey was altered on numerous occasions after it was founded by Charlemagne in 769, with each successive abbot bringing a new element to the building. The version that remains today dates from the 18C. The abbey church, overall a plain building, contains a gallery near the main doorway that is the only remains of the cloisters. Today, the convent buildings are occupied by the town hall and the Musée Fernand-Desmoulin.
