Situated on a causse in Haut-Quercy, founded by Charles Martel, this is is known as «the town with seven towers». It became an important town from the 11C and was given several advantages by Viscount Raymond IV including the right to mint its own coins. The town's prosperity from the 13 to 14C was soon interrupted by the Hundred Years War then the Religious Wars.
