Lascaux caves, the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory”, contain over 1,500 paintings from the Magdalenian period. Discovered in 1940, the caves were then closed to the public in 1963 because of damage to the walls. A replica, Lascaux II, featuring copies of the paintings, can now be visited instead. The animals depicted are very recognisable: horses with big bellies and slender heads, horned and hoofed aurochs and ibex, and stags with fantastic antlers. Most interestingly, these creatures have been painted showing movement and making use of the cave wall relief.
