: Michelin's recommendations
It was here that King Richard the Lionheart was mortally wounded in 1199. Dominating the town, the isolated 11C keep is of impressive proportions (25m high, 10m in diameter and with walls measuring between 2.5m and 3m thick!). Inside is a vaulted hall and lower room, further up is the guardroom, and beyond, the main lodgings (extended in the 17C, parts date from the 11C-13C). Set in pleasant gardens, this is a fine example of military architecture from feudal times.
