According to legend, these uplands owe their name to a shepherd who was seduced here by 1 000 diabolical cattle…although the more likely derivation comes from “1 000 springs” (1 000 batz in the Celtic language) or “deserted mountain” (from the Latin vacua and the Gaulish melo)…. Among the treasures of the Limousin’s regional natural park of Millevaches, don’t miss the 8 000 year old Longeyroux tourbiere, home to rare species (reptiles and birds including the short-toed eagle).
