Situated at the bottom of the Savoyard Coomb (la Combe de Savoie), Albertville commands the entrance to the Arly Valley, Beaufortain and Tarentaise and is an important hub from which many tourist routes run to a variety of resorts for winter sports. It was for its privileged position that is was chosen as the host of the 16th Winter Olympics in 1992.
