This is where Digne was founded in the 14C and grew around a castle that has since disappeared. Tiny, winding streets interspersed with flights of steps (such as the montée Saint-Charles with its vaulted passages) lead to the Church of St Jerome which overlooks the town. At the foot of the hill, the shops in the pedestrian streets have attractive pastel-coloured façades.
